What Does Electroacupuncture Do?

Electroacupuncture works in many different ways, from inducing the release of natural pain relievers and other neurochemicals, to increasing the local healing response in injured tissue. When used at different frequencies in specific areas of the body, electroacupuncture can stimulate a wide range of different healing responses. In the case of injuries and neuromuscular dysfunction, our process of electroacupuncture works by sending impulses to the motor point of a muscle to restore its function.

A motor point is a region of the muscle where the motor nerve sits. It is how the nervous systems controls the muscle. Often times, weakness and pain are a consequence of this not doing its job. Since motor points respond well to electrical stimulus, treatment involves using a gentle current to excite the motor point to restore full function of the muscle. This electrical stimulation is able to get the entire muscle fully firing again, improving strength and range of motion. As a result, the various processes leading to pain are also halted, reducing pain at the same time.

Neuromodulation

The stimulation of a motor point creates positive changes in the nervous system via a process called neuromodulation. Neuromodulation is what allows us to achieve significant and lasting results in cases of pain and injury. When the muscle is functioning normally again, range of motion and joint stability improve, strength and force production increase, mechanics and range of motion are better, and new levels of athletic performance can be achieved. Neuromodulation can stimulate a healing response anywhere in the body.

Acute and Chronic Pain

Electroacupuncture is extremely effective in treating any acute and chronic pain as well as long standing issues – old injuries, scars, stenosis, scoliosis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Electroacupuncture combined with a thorough assessment can help everyone, and specifically help athletes achieve greater success in sports, recovery or daily life. Electroacupuncture helps reduce pain and speed up recovery for short or long-standing issues by inducing the release of neurochemicals and pain relievers, restoring neuromuscular function, increasing blood flow and nutrient supply to the tissues.

What Does Electroacupuncture Feel Like?

Most patients report that electroacupuncture provides a tingling or a vibrating feeling. Pain relief is almost immediate in most cases. Clients regularly report experiencing pain relief and less tightness, even if some soreness remains near the sight of needling. This soreness typically subsides in less than a day, and can be improved with moist heat like a hot bath or microwaveable gel pack. Electroacupuncture returns the muscles to their full function without the need for any physical pressure or excessive stimulation. Patients have reported this is the least intense, painful or invasive type of treatment they have received. Many of our patients – competitive athletes in contact sports and weekend warriors, alike – have returned to sports and activities they previously thought they would never be able to participate in again. Upon their return, they note improved performance and remain pain free longer.

Scalp Electroacupuncture

We excel at electroacupuncture, the most researched form of acupuncture. Our PeakMIND services apply this approach to the scalp, using an approach known as scalp acupuncture. PeakMIND combines a specific selection of points adapted from scalp acupuncture with relevant aspects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) research and established protocols. So, what exactly is scalp electroacupuncture?

Scalp acupuncture is a contemporary practice combining traditional Chinese medicine theory with modern knowledge of the brain. It has a 70-year history of successfully treating many acute and chronic neurological conditions. In this practice, scalp locations corresponding to specific regions of the brain are selected to address neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, post-stroke symptoms, chronic pain, aphasia, and dyslexia. Thin needles are placed between the scalp and the skull, stimulating the selected brain regions. Traditionally, scalp acupuncture includes frequent twisting of these needles a particular number of times per minute. We are able to make this approach much more comfortable and effective by replacing this physical manipulation with a gentle electrical current.

In scalp electroacupuncture, we introduce a gentle current to the needles, which feels like a light tapping on the scalp. These treatments can be very effective for a range of neurological issues, and the scalp electroacupuncture provided in our PeakMIND sessions provides patients with immediately measurable neurological and autonomic nervous system improvements.

Acupuncture vs. Electroacupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through the skin. This is done in a strategic manner in points along the body to balance the flow of blood and energy –  chi or qi (chee). The energy flows through pathways (meridians) in your body.

Electroacupuncture at Jackupuncture focuses on neuromodulation, using the same acupuncture tools and techniques with the benefits of electrical stimulation (EStim) to induce change in different neurophysiological structures, like a motor point. This is a natural way to stimulate or excite a muscle and restore its function.

Electroacupuncture Side Effects

Patients have reported feeling some soreness or tired muscles like a hard work out post treatment. This usually goes away within the day or by the next. The muscle has been stimulated and is undergoing a process of recovery, so each experience will vary depending on amount of sites treated and overall health.

F.A.Q.s

How is electroacupuncture different from TENS?

The human body has a unique healing response to the needle. That, plus the ability to use the needle to place the current of electricity closer to the nervous tissue and structures to be treated is what allows electroacupuncture to achieve greater and longer-lasting results than TENS or any other form of electrical stimulation therapy.

I’ve had this injury/pain for years. I’ve tried everything. How can electroacupuncture help?

Electroacupuncture provides patients with outstanding results even for chronic injuries and pain because it allows us to neuromodulate: a key aspect of pain and injury healing that is often overlooked by other clinicians and unaddressed by other modalities. The process of neuromodulation is an electrical one, and it is the natural process the body uses to heal itself. By using the appropriate frequencies for your issue, we are able to restart the process of healing in a meaningful and lasting way.

Another important way we are able to help patients who have tried everything else is our assessments. We don’t make assumptions about patients’ conditions or needs. We go through a systematized process to evaluate each case. We review the patient history and provide a thorough physical assessment to identify the factors behind pain and poor healing, weakness and limited range of motion. This helps us create an appropriate treatment strategy to address your body’s particular needs. Then, based on these objective findings, we apply the necessary form of EA to achieve the desired outcome.
